One of my favorite meditation activities to try this spring. It’s called Mindful Walking. Now you might be thinking you walk all the time, what’s so mindful about that? Well it’s about how you walk Ever walked from one place to the next with little to no conscious memory of how you got there? That’s autopilot or mindless walking.
With mindful walking the idea is to turn a simple activity like walking into a moving meditation. This can be especially amazing on a beautiful nature trail but really the beauty of the practice that it can be done anywhere anytime as long or short as you’d like.
To start, simply pick where you’d like to start walking and begin by standing tall with shoulders drawn back, feeling the weight of your feet on the earth. After a long deep exhale allow your inhale to arise naturally. Then take a step forward, consciously and methodically, paying attention to what it feels like; and I mean really pay attention. With all five senses. As if you are taking your very first steps walking. As if you’ve never walked before. An alien or a child in your own body. Marvel at the miracle of walking. Each step connected to your breath. Each step into the spring. Each step a new moment.
